Through either dumb luck or knowing guys that worked at recording studios in the greater NYC area, I got to meet Will Lee, Neil Jason, and the late great T-Bone Wolk of Hall and Oates fame, all within the space of maybe a year. All nice guys, willing to answer questions, and more than accommodating to a young and star struck player like me. This was 15-20 years ago.

Staying within the topic at hand, I did get to play their respective instruments briefly, and they had one surprising thing in common : I was shocked to find that all their basses had pretty high action and I thought they were uncomfortable to play. I've since raised my action to similar specs as those guys and it actually seemed to help in terms of tone, dynamics, and control over the instrument.
